Begin Again…

There is something both exciting and intimidating about a blank canvas. At first, it holds nothing but possibility. You may have an idea, a sketch, a color palette, or simply a feeling of where you want to go, but once you begin, the painting starts becoming something of its own.

Life can feel a lot like that.

We make plans. We work hard. We pour ourselves into projects, relationships, dreams, and goals, hoping that all of that effort will lead somewhere meaningful. Sometimes it does exactly when we expect it to, and sometimes it takes much longer than we imagined.

That is usually when we begin questioning ourselves.

Maybe I am not doing enough. Maybe I took the wrong path. Maybe I am not as capable as I thought I was.

Fear can get very loud in those moments, but fear does not always mean stop. Sometimes it simply means you have reached a place where you cannot yet see what comes next, and that is where perseverance really begins.

Perseverance is not about never feeling discouraged, and it is not about pretending disappointment does not exist. It is about brushing yourself off and continuing anyway. It is deciding that one difficult day, one setback, one unanswered question, or one outcome you did not expect does not get to decide the rest of your story.

As an artist, I have learned that sometimes a painting needs to change direction. I may paint over something I thought would work, scrape something back, soften an edge, add another layer, or begin again completely. That does not mean the painting failed. It simply means I am still listening to what it needs to become.

I think we have to give ourselves that same grace.

We are allowed to change direction.
We are allowed to rethink something.
We are allowed to begin again.

And again.

And again.

There is no shame in starting over when the path in front of you no longer feels right. There is strength in trusting the process even when you cannot yet see the finished picture.

I am reminding myself of that too.

Not every seed we plant grows immediately, and not every hour of work produces an instant result. Sometimes the things we are building need time before we can see what all of that effort has created.

That does not mean the work was wasted. It means the story is still unfolding.

So if you are standing in front of your own blank canvas today, uncertain of what comes next, pick up the brush. Take the next step. Release the fear of needing to know exactly how everything will turn out.

Trust what you have learned. Trust what you have already made it through. Trust that beginning again does not erase everything that came before it. It carries those lessons forward.

Your life does not have to be perfectly mapped out before you move toward something new. Sometimes perseverance is simply saying, “I may not know where this is going yet, but I am willing to keep going.”

This Week’s Reflection

What are you tempted to give up on simply because the outcome has not arrived yet?

And if you released the fear of needing to know exactly how it will turn out, what would your next small step be?

Give yourself permission this week to begin again.

You are worthy of the life you are still creating.

You are enough. You do enough. You have enough.

And there is still plenty of blank canvas in front of you.

Ann Alexander

My artistic journey began with formal studies at the esteemed Willoughby School of Fine Art in Cleveland, Ohio, during my formative years. Transitioning to Cincinnati in the mid-70s, I continued my artistic education at the Cincinnati Art Academy, all while navigating the excitement of high school. However, it was a pivotal move to Southern California during my senior year that expanded my artistic horizons.

In California, I pursued further education in art at Citrus College before transferring to San Diego State University to specialize in Fine Art with a focus on Graphic Design. The culmination of my academic pursuits led me to Platt College in San Diego, where I honed my skills in Graphic Design, laying the foundation for my professional endeavors.

Embarking on my career, I delved into the dynamic realm of graphic design, first with a prominent publishing company and later as a freelance designer. However, my path took an unexpected turn when I was introduced to the world of Merchandising, leading me to contribute my talents to renowned companies such as Pier One, Linens and Things, and Office Max.

Despite the demands of my professional life, my love for painting endured, even if it had to momentarily take a back seat. Now, as I re-enter the art world, I find myself rediscovering the joy and fulfillment that comes with creating art. Drawing inspiration from my experiences and the guidance of local artists, I have embarked on a new chapter, showcasing my evolving style and rekindling my artistic spirit.

My journey has undoubtedly shaped my artistic voice, evolving with each phase of life's twists and turns. While my style may have transformed over the years, it remains a testament to my growth as an artist and as an individual.

I am thrilled to share my work with you and your esteemed gallery, hopeful that it resonates with viewers as much as it does with me.
